Xylem – Technical Writing and XML

The Brief.

Xylem (formerly ITT Flygt) is a world leader in water technology, providing equipment and services for water and wastewater applications with a broad portfolio of products and services that address the full cycle of water — from collection, distribution and use to its return to the environment.

Expertinfo is a preferred supplier to Xylem, and has for a number of years helped the company with everything from technical communication to specialist consulting for XML, single-sourcing and content management.

Expertinfo has helped Xylem with senior and experienced technical writers in a number of projects. A few years ago, we were also trusted with the task of re-coding all the stylesheets (XSLT) that are used for the many different formats and layouts Xylem use when publishing technical documentation. When Expertinfo got this assignment, the XSLT stylesheets consisted of roughly 50,000 lines of code, and there was very little coherent structure (so called “spaghetti code”). Furthermore, lots of code was unnecessarily duplicated, which made it very hard to maintain it. After this assignment, we had reduced the amount of code to a 10th of when we started – 5,000 lines of code – to do the same job as well as improvements. We also structured it in modules, in order to make it much more easy to add more features in the future.
